Local search in Toronto is harder than local search almost anywhere else in Canada, for a structural reason. The map pack shows three results. Proximity to the searcher is one of the strongest ranking inputs. And the Greater Toronto Area sprawls across hundreds of square kilometres containing millions of people and a very large number of competing businesses.
A business in Etobicoke is not competing with a business in Scarborough for most searches, because the searcher's location largely decides that. What you are competing for is visibility within a realistic radius, and that changes what is worth doing.
Google Business Profile Is the Whole Game
For map pack results, your Business Profile matters more than your website. Treat it as a primary asset rather than a directory listing you filled in once.
Categories
Your primary category carries substantial weight. Choose the most specific one that accurately describes the business, not the broadest. Add secondary categories for genuine services, and do not pad the list with categories you do not actually serve.
Service areas
If you serve customers at their location, define the service area properly. Listing every municipality in the GTA when you realistically serve three does not extend your reach; it dilutes relevance signals.
Hours, attributes and services
Keep hours accurate including holidays. Fill in the services list with the terms customers actually use. Complete profiles outperform sparse ones consistently, and completeness is entirely within your control.
Photos
Real photographs of the premises, team and work, added regularly rather than once at setup. Profiles with recent, genuine imagery see meaningfully better engagement.
Reviews: Recency and Response Matter as Much as Rating
A 4.9 average from three years ago performs worse than a 4.6 with reviews arriving steadily this month. Google reads review velocity as a signal that a business is active.
Ask consistently, at the point where a customer is most satisfied - job completion, delivery, resolution. Make the link trivially easy to use. Never gate requests to only happy customers; review gating violates Google's policies and risks the profile.
Respond to everything, including the positive ones. Responses are public, they demonstrate an active business, and how you handle a critical review is read closely by prospective customers making a decision between three options.
NAP Consistency Still Matters
Name, address and phone number must match exactly across your website, Business Profile, and the directories that matter in Canada: Yellow Pages, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and the relevant industry and chamber listings.
Inconsistency is common and usually accidental - an old suite number, a previous phone line, a business name with and without "Inc." Each mismatch weakens confidence in the entity. This is unglamorous work with a real payoff.
Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site with the identical details, so the same information is machine-readable from your own domain. Our schema markup guide covers the implementation.
Location Pages, Done Honestly
Businesses serving multiple parts of the GTA often want a page per area. This works when the pages are genuinely distinct and fails badly when they are not.
A useful location page contains information specific to that area: work you have done there, neighbourhoods served, local considerations, relevant testimonials. A page that is the template with "Mississauga" swapped for "Vaughan" is thin content at scale, and it can drag down the whole site.
Three substantial location pages beat fifteen templated ones, every time.
Local Links and Mentions
Links from within your region carry weight that generic directory links do not. Local business associations, chambers of commerce, BIAs, community sponsorships, local news coverage, partnerships with complementary businesses, and local supplier or client sites all qualify.
These are usually earned through actual local activity rather than outreach campaigns, which is slower and considerably more durable.
The Proximity Constraint, Handled Realistically
You cannot rank in the map pack for a searcher who is 30 kilometres away from your only location. No amount of optimization overcomes that.
What you can do:
- Dominate your genuine radius rather than chasing the whole GTA.
- Compete in organic results, which are less proximity-bound, for the broader terms.
- Build the content and authority that wins "near me" searches when someone is actually near you.
- If expansion is genuinely warranted, open a real location. Virtual offices and fake addresses get profiles suspended, and the suspension is far more damaging than the visibility was worth.
What to Do This Month
- Audit the Business Profile end to end: categories, hours, services, description, photos.
- Check NAP consistency across the top ten places your business is listed.
- Set up a repeatable review request at the natural point of customer satisfaction.
- Respond to every outstanding review.
- Add or verify LocalBusiness structured data on the site.
- Identify three genuine local link opportunities and pursue them.
None of this is clever. It is mostly consistency, which is exactly why so many competitors have not done it. For the broader fundamentals beyond the Toronto specifics, see our general local SEO guide.
